Web Development / Application Development

A lot of time Web Designing is confused with web development. The terms "design" and "development" have different meanings and interpretations. Web Designing is referred to creating a website (generally referring to graphics, content, forms, add ons, and compiling them into a static or dynamic web pages which are connected to each other creating a website). Whereas Web Development is the development part of certain websites which have a functionality that breaks down the website into two parts: (a) Front End (User Interface) and (b) Back End (Processing information / development).

Web Applications are used to create websites that do more than just displaying information.

For example: a payment gateway company has a website to explain their products, services, prices, benefits and more and prompt the user to apply online. Once the user fills the form on the website and submits it, the information of the user is retrieved by the lead management system of the website (application) which stores the information in a database, evaluates it by a certain eligibility factors which might include (nature of business, location of business, minimum monthly sales, etc) and forwards the information to the administrative panel where administrators could log in and assign that particular case to their processing departments, could delete it, could change the status and more. The departments can then process those applications and upon the decision get back the user informing them that they are all set and then proceed to installation.

A very general example is an affiliate website promoting certain products or services. Affiliate links keep changing pretty often, and there is nothing you can do but to manually (unless you are using datafeeds, which might require some manual update every few days). Now, besides the links being updated some affiliates expire, some offer better deals than the others. In this scenerio if you get a website designed by a developer, you would need him to keep updating links almost every week.
