META TAGS

Once your website content is ready, its time for the meta tags to get the attention.

In short Meta Tags are the tags that contain all information of your website that you want to give to the search engines, without showing on your website. You must have different sets of meta tags on every page of your website. There are various types of meta tags that you can use specially for search engine optimizations which includes title, description, keywords, abstract, subject, visit-after, distribution, rating, robots, etc . . . To download softwares to write these meta tags for you, click here.

The most important meta tag is the keywords tag. You can put upto 744 keywords in the keywords tag, which you want the search engine to consider you for, while listing the search results.

It would be a good idea to find around 250 best keywords relevant to your website and keeping the rest space for the future insertions based on your researches, promotions, offers, products, services, etc.

The most effective way to find the right keywords is the strip and store method. Just copy the content of your webpage to a text file and start stripping the common words like "and, the, a, so, of, for, your, our, to, etc, then, when, that, this, etc". Take a look at the remaining words and see if it reflects the important content or not. It would be better to go word by word and now strip the less used, but general words that are not actually a part of the search terms like "important, content, time, attention, forward, more, move, include, common, method, etc" Now you will see a list of words that specifically relate to your website content, services, products and offers. pick up the most relevant words and add to your meta keywords tag.

Concentrate and understand the purpose of each meta tag before writing their details. The description on the index page should give a brief intro about the services and products offered by the website. Similarly all the tags on the index page should reflect to the entire website or company or organization. The meta tags on other pages must give desctiption about the page's content primarily and then the content of the site, if there is more space available.

These tags must be placed in the <Head> tags of the body. Many websites do not use these tags at all and still are on the top listings of search engines because meta tags are not the only determining factor for SEO, these are just additional information centers for your website. Other factors like link popularity, content, etc make more difference, we will proceed to the next level once we are done with the meta tags.

Once you have all the meta tags ready and pasted on the site, you may want to upload the website to the web server. Remember, all the pages of your website will be directly accessible to the search engine spiders (robots) which will index the pages and can show the pages on the search engine listings. If your website has any content that you dont want the search engines to pick, for example cgi-bin, or maybe any file that you have uploaded for evaluation or testing purposes, or maybe a file containing a list of users or clients, etc, you will have to upload a text file called robots.txt with the commands that you want the spiders to obey.

Robots.txt

In the end of this article you can find links from where you can get information to make the robots.txt file for your website.

Now that you have the files ready and uploaded to the server, your website is accessible to the world, but till the time, you dont put efforts to make it available, there wont be any benefit of the efforts you've put in the making of the site. To promote your website on the internet, proceed to the next level.
